“If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an
exception, it is a prevailing attitude.” Colin Powell
“If you can somehow think and dream of success in small steps, every time you make a step, every time you accomplish a small goal, it gives you confidence to go from there.” John H. Johnson
“Excellence is NOT an exception.” Think about that for a moment.
It is not an accident. It is not something that will always be elusive. It is
attainable. It is built one step at a time. And it starts with an attitude. That
attitude permeates throughout everything you do – throughout everything you ARE. It is an attitude that says, “Yes I can!” Not, “Well maybe.” It is an attitude
that emits confidence; and, that confidence is built when the small steps are
achieved. Be consistent in doing the little things correctly and, before you
know it, you will have achieved great things. So, translate this to the soccer
field. That ball is in the air about to come down on you. It left the foot of a
player like Courtney Woelfel and it has traveled 40 yards in 0.25 seconds. If
you can settle that ball, you will be able to pass it off to your teammate who
is in perfect scoring position. If you get it right, your team keeps the
momentum of the game and goes on to win. If you get it wrong, you lose the ball and your team does not experience the thrill of a goal and never develops
momentum to carry them through – game is lost. It is all on you and your ability
to settle this ball. In that split second you realize that every moment you
spent training has prepared you for this. [And it goes both ways . . . your lack
of training will be evident, too.] Think about those drills . . . did you do
them right? At game speed? Were you consistently successful? OR did you only do them while the coach was watching? Slowly? Sometimes successful, but many times not? Oh, the ball just made impact with you . . . what happens next? That is up to you!
“OUR future lies chiefly in our own hands.” Paul Robeson
If you can’t figure out that quote, then something is broken within you. The future is going to happen whether you prepare for it or not. There is no stopping it. Think of time like a river – constantly moving. You have no choice but to be in the river. But how are you surviving in it? Are you a lodged tree branch? A floating timber? Are you a kayak or a speed boat? We have choices to make, right? I am making mine . . . which is why you are reading this! It is why I made the “motivation cards.” I want to plan for a better future. I want our
TEAM to think differently . . . forward. I want to model what I expect from
you.
