Beautiful Game
One of the reasons soccer is called the "beautiful game" is because of its flair and flexibility. What separates soccer from most other team sports is the continuous play. There are no "time outs." The coach cannot tell you what play to run next. In fact, soccer mimics life. You are faced with a challenge, you have to weigh your options and make a good and quick decision, and most of the time you have to incorporate friends to accomplish your bigger goals.
As you look at the following "slides", please remember that you are not looking at set plays like basketball or football. You are not necessarily running routes. Think of them more like concepts . . . ideas that help organize the team's attack. Mexico is about a center-to-outside-to-center approach. England is a possession wing approach with a sneaky back-side option. And Brazil is a straight down the middle with creative movement from the attacking forwards. ALL of them begin with the Y-shape in the midfield. Understand, it takes the defense to distribute and support. The midfield has to develop and maintain possession. And EVERYONE has to be available for support and make the runs off the ball to create the confusion for the opposition.
Study these, print these pictures, sit down with your pennies on a kitchen table, and play it out. Have fun. I can't wait to see the execution.
